Frederick A. Cook Exhibition & Library
Sullivan County Historical Museum

The Society maintains a display and library at the Sullivan County Museum.  The exhibit begun in 1975 was revamped and expanded in 1998 and includes a small video library and artifacts from Cook's various expeditions, including a Polar sled made by his brother Theodore at their nearby homestead.  A library of some 400 Polar volumes including many first editions owned by Cook, is also in the building.

Frederick A. Cook Collection
Library of Congress

The Frederick A. Cook Collection was given to the Library of Congress in 1989 following the death of his grandaughter, Janet Vetter, whose papers included that of her mother Helene Cook Vetter (1906-77), Cook's younger daughter.   Prepared in 1991, it involves 10 linear feet of shelf space and approximately 6,000 items.  The papers span the years 1881-1977.  The Collection is in the Special Collections Room of the Madison Building.  Photographic images are stored separately, in Photo Archives, Third Floor   Many of the photos are also available online.

Frederick A. Cook Papers
Byrd Polar Research Center Archives

The Collection at the Byrd Polar Research Center Archives were presented to The Ohio State University by the Frederick A. Cook Society in 1996, comprising papers of the Society, Helene Cook Vetter, Janet Vetter and Frederick A. Cook.   In addition, there are photographs and audiovisual materials, all of this encompassing the years 1891 to 1996.  They are listed in a 163 page Register published in 1997.

Complete sets of Polar Priorities, the Society Membership News and the Society Newsletter from 1974 through 2000 are bound and listed at each Archive/Library.


NOTE:  There are additional papers on Frederick A. Cook in the Steffanson Collection of the Dartmouth College Library, composed of articles, correspondence and news clippings, involving some .5 linear feet of material.   They are catalogued in pages 141-147 of the Register of the Byrd/Cook Collection noted above.
